Favourite Website Awards (FWA) was established in May 2000, to recognise the latest and best cutting edge creativity.
FWA is an industry recognised award program and inspirational portal, based in England and is one of the World's leading website recognitions. FWA is widely recognised as the number 1 achievement for innovative web design through the Site Of The Year award.
FWA was named the number 1 web award in the world, beating the likes of YouTube and the Webbys, in the Chicago Tribune's first World Wide Web Awards Award 2007, in which they "consider the scores of sites vying to become to Internet excellence what Oscar is to film excellence." They summised "It's a fun, fascinating place to visit, with the emphasis not on blather about awards but on sending visitors off to what they really want to see, cool new sites. If they're lucky, some of those sites will be as good as the Favourite Websites site itself, winner of our first Best Web Awards Award."
FWA is the most visited website award program in the history of the internet, with over 100 million site visits as of August 2010 and an estimated additional 45 million per year.
The FWA website receives in excess of 4.8 million site visits per month and the traffic curve continues to rise.
FWA's audience is global, reaching 181 of the 193 countries in the world in May 2007 alone.
FWA was established in May of 2000 and still remains an unfunded project.
A number of sponsors, who provide their services for free and dedicated volunteers, help to keep the FWA project thriving and growing.
By scouting the web and evaluating nominated sites, using a well established criteria and evaluation procedure, FWA selects and showcases future thinking, progressively designed sites who use cutting edge technology, together with inspirational ideas, that lead the way for future generations.
FWA showcases one site every day, a Site Of The Day (SOTD), with a Site Of The Month (SOTM) being selected at the end of each calendar month from that month’s SOTDs. At the end of each year the twelve SOTM winners enter the contest for the People’s Choice Award (PCA), first introduced in 2002, and for the overall Site Of The Year (SOTY), first established in 2000.
FWA’s visitors choose the PCA winner by participating in a year-end public vote, with each visitor able to cast a single vote. The SOTM with the highest number of votes after a two-week period of voting is declared the People’s Choice for the given year.
SOTY is decided by a leading industry panel who participate in two rounds of judging, the first narrowing the twelve SOTM winners down to two sites, with the final round of judging giving a unanimous winner… the Site Of The Year for the given year.
FWA features interviews and articles with designers and developers of winning websites, including the established and well known and the new generation, the future of the web.
FWA also features themed wallpapers from winning designers, and has a comprehensive searchable database spanning back to 2000.
Certain areas of the FWA site, including the “DOCK” feature (enabling users to personalise and bookmark much of the FWA site for future visits and access from any computer), may require registration.
FWA has become a daily surfing hot-spot which serves millions of visitors every year and receives thousands of nominations each month from a broad global audience including web enthusiasts, web and graphic designers, web news editors, students, educational institutes and teachers/lecturers, Flash masters and general surfers.
FWA is a project originally developed by "treecity", an agency that was short-listed for the Yell UK Web Awards 2000, in the Best Web Design Agency, UK, category.
