Good afternoon, my middle name is Everett, don't laugh!

Please give us a brief bio of yourself.

Good afternoon, my middle name is Everett, don't laugh!

I'm from the seaside town of Exmouth in Devon, went to Ravensbourne College to do my degree, joined Edwards Churcher a new media company in 1997, founded by one of my tutors... went and worked at The Mill to help set up Mill Lab, to do all things online, this didn’t fit in with their vision, so got the boot... and now I'm a joint partner/director/cleaner at Engage.

What do you do for inspiration

My best mate, an empty moleskine sketchbook, The Shaston off Carnaby Street, 4 pints of export lager, one pencil, one black berol felt tip, and take in turns completing each others illustration... you end up in tears, but does get you thinking!

This is then followed by a trip down to CentrePoint Snooker Club till the early hours.

Please list 3 of your favourite sites.

hahakid.net... just because its not trying to sell anything... any of yugop's sites... although I'd like to see a different typeface used and this is dead boring, but gmail...

No longer do I have to keep saving emails from Outlook to look at when I get home... although I've put a ban on working at home now... a friend of mine has some good advice... rip the arse out of Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and then enjoy the rest of the week...

I won't tell you who told me that, but let’s just say they are probably the best at what they do.

What do you regard as being your biggest achievement?

Getting out of Whitechapel, knew it was time to leave when our Addison Lee driver had to fight little bastards trying to get in our car.

What software couldn't you live without?

Flash, Handbrake

What projects do you have in the pipeline?

A site for Wave, the sound studio... will make a good year where we've done the site for the best post house (the-mill.com), the best editors (finalcut-edit.com) and the best Sound Designers!

Also a private project called thisSoho... it'll be .co.uk and .com but can't say any more, other than we're looking for sponsors at the moment, I'm also a director of a travel company called mrVisitor, and have some big plans for the new year

Who do you rate as being the top 3 design companies?

Pass, I don't like my own work, and am even more critical of others! I love Mr Bingo stuff though...

What effect on traffic do your new designs have?

I tried to get a competition started where entrants had to get a site to the top of Google... the only proviso was that you had to type 'Nike' and click 'I feel lucky' ...

I managed to do it for Helvetica... , and pretty much all the clients we've had we've got them plenty of hits...

  Who is your target audience?

Professionals and smelly students.

What area of web design lacks the most?

Control... I want to be able to conduct a site... not idly sit there while it goes from transition to transition.

What did your very first site look like? Is it still online?

I did a lot of stuff for Reuters, internally unfortunately, was quite frustrating, also spent the first couple of years purely doing pitch work, and concepts.

Have you written any books, if not do you plan to?

I'm a useless writer, managed to get the lowest mark of the year for my thesis for my degree. There is a guide book in the pipeline though.

Do you think Flash is here to stay?

Yes, but I'd like a Flash Browser, with an HTML plug-in :)

What are your views on design/graphic school. Do you think someone can get into the field without educational experience in a school environment?

You don't appreciate it while you're there...

And some people have a funny idea about things in the professional world, and not in a good way, but then again, some of the people on our course had even stranger ideas in an even worse way.

When your company was just getting started, what did you find was most effective for getting new clients?

Good, and different work.

How have you learned so many Flash/design skills and techniques and can you offer any advice for newbies?

Experiment, Don't think you can just bowl up to a client with a bunch of stills... a good site is all about moulding and crafting an experience, nothing more frustrating than getting given

a photoshop document, and prayer!

Also be truthful with your clients, if something is going to be late, tell them don't try and rush it or hide it...

What is the most expensive thing you've bought in the last week?

A Beer at the Masters Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall, actually the missus bought that, but still!

What type of overcoat do you wear when Flashing, basically are you a labels man?

More of a lapels man, Members Only, is a pain getting the Eurostar to C&A every few months though!

Any parting shots or pearls of wisdom?

Think of your Saturday job, and be thankful.

It's been a privilege, thanks very much.

No problem, sorry its late.... though I did warn you!
